Lance and Keri LeClere met each other while stationed in San Diego, Calif., as part of their service in the U.S. Navy, with the former as an orthopedic surgeon and the latter as a registered nurse. As part of his residency, Dr. Lance received casualties from Afghanistan and Iraq, while Keri worked with MED search patients and in the recovery room. The pair were searching for an opportunity to participate in a medical mission, ultimately volunteering to help pilgrims in the 2019 Warriors to Lourdes. The trip was a rewarding, faith-fulfilling experience where they witnessed the awesome healing afforded to members of the military in Lourdes. The Knights of Columbus, in partnership with the Archdiocese for Military Services USA, provides the opportunity and means for our non-wounded, wounded, ill and injured U.S. warriors to participate in the Warriors to Lourdes pilgrimage for a period of prayer and spiritual guidance. Knights in the Pittsburgh area knew that veterans living at VA hospitals often struggle to find activities to do in the evenings once their daily programming has finished. After surveying residents and staff about how they could help, the Knights offered to fundraise and build an observatory at the hospital. The newly built facility is the first of its kind nationwide and has provided a tremendous outlet for veterans, allowing them to explore the heavens.
