On the day following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, the Knights of Columbus established the Heroes Fund. Proceeds from this fund were paid to the families of emergency response personnel -- police, fire and medical -- who lost their lives in the line of duty and service to others. For many, the K of C check was the first assistance received, at a time when it was most needed. Knights in the Pittsburgh area knew that veterans living at VA hospitals often struggle to find activities to do in the evenings once their daily programming has finished. After surveying residents and staff about how they could help, the Knights offered to fundraise and build an observatory at the hospital. The newly built facility is the first of its kind nationwide and has provided a tremendous outlet for veterans, allowing them to explore the heavens.
