U.S. Army Captain Experiences Healing in Lourdes
0:00
U.S. Army Capt. Matthew Mayor and his twin brother, Mark, both have the same military rank, served in combat in Afghanistan, and are members of the Knights of Columbus — Matthew a member of Cardinal Gibbons Council 2838 in Fayetteville, N.C., and Mark a member of Carmel (Calif.) Mission Council 4593. Ten years after his deployment, Matthew still suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, but tried to ignore it as best as he could by soldiering on. After participating in Warriors to Lourdes in 2018, Mark encouraged his brother to join him and his wife, Malori, on the pilgrimage in 2019. During the trip, conversations with his brother helped Matthew recognize that addressing his trauma was not a sign of weakness. Warriors to Lourdes provided him an environment conducive to healing together with fellow military personnel. “Our Lady of Lourdes reminds me what heaven might look like, with all nations coming together to praise God,” he said. The Knights of Columbus, in partnership with the Archdiocese for Military Services USA, provides the opportunity and means for our non-wounded, wounded, ill and injured U.S. warriors to participate in the Warriors to Lourdes pilgrimage for a period of prayer and spiritual guidance.
