In 1991, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. But less well- known was Patterson’s deep Catholic faith. In retirement, he joined the Knights of Columbus in New Paltz, N.Y., and took great joy serving as a eucharisitc minister at the local nursing home. Called the “Gentleman of Boxing” at his death in 2006, he was remembered for his kindness and integrity. Monsignor Bernard J. Quinn, an associate member of the Knights of Columbus, served as a military chaplain in France during the First World War. Following a mustard gas attack, Monsignor returned to the Diocese of Brooklyn and received permission to begin a ministry to African American Catholics. Despite attacks against himself and his work by the Ku Klux Klan, Monsignor Quinn’s work would culminate in creating one of the largest childcare services in the State of New York.
