Nowa Huta and the Struggle for Freedom in Poland Built outside Kraków, the Polish city of Nowa Huta was supposed to be the Communist workers’ paradise. The repressive regime did not want Churches constructed in this “New City.” Karol Wojtyla, who at that time was bishop of Krakow, strove for a new church in Nowa Huta. This heroic struggle planted the seeds of resistance in Polish society, and reveals the depth of Wojtyla’s convictions on the centrality of religious freedom.
