En la primavera de 1945, prisioneros del Campo de Concentración de Dachau sintieron que la victoria aliada en la Segunda Guerra Mundial era inminente, pero también creían que los Nazis no los dejarían salir vivos del campo. El 14 de abril, comenzaron una novena y le entregaron su seguridad a san José de Kalisz. Sin que lo supieran, el mismo día, Heinrich Himmler firmó una orden para la ejecución de todos los prisioneros de Dachau. Nueve días después, más de 800 prisioneros se consagraron a san José.
