Over the course of the war in Ukraine, tens of thousands of landmines, improvised explosives, and other potentially explosive devices have contaminated much of the country. These devices and their remnants pose a serious risk to the safety of children and others seeking to return to their homes. The Knights of Columbus, along with the Safe Pathway Group and in partnership with the government of Ukraine, have provided funding to and overseen the training of Ukrainian nationals to locate and deactivate landmines. Leaving Our Homeland Behind
0:00
By mid-March, more than 2.5 million Ukrainians had sought refuge from Russia’s invasion, crossing the border to Poland and other neighboring countries. A top UN official called it “the fastest growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.” The decision to leave was harrowing for Roman Panivnyk, a Knight from Kyiv, and his wife, Olga. Torn between loyalty to their country, concern for Olga’s elderly parents and responsibility for their three children, they ultimately left to Poland. From there, they received assistance from Roman’s brother Knights, and the family was able to continue to Olga’s sister’s home in Pennsylvania. Olga describes their decision, their journey from Kyiv and their determination to speak for those they left behind. Ukrainian Knights Aid Caritas following Tragedy
0:00
Since the early days of the war in Ukraine, the Knights of Columbus have partnered with Caritas-Spes, a charitable mission of the Catholic Church operating in the country. Following the destruction of a Caritas-Spes warehouse in Lviv in September 2023 and the loss of over 600,000 pounds of aid, the Knights of Columbus stepped up. They provided much needed supplies to Caritas so they could continue their mission to help the most vulnerable affected by the war.
