French Knights Honor Fallen of Belleau Wood

In June 1918, the Imperial German Army was 35 miles outside Paris and advancing quickly with aims to capture the city and end World War I. At this critical point, U.S. Infantry and Marine regiments arrived at Belleau Wood to fight alongside the French. Grossly outnumbered, the Allies managed to defeat the Germans in one of the bloodiest and most heroic battles of the war. On Nov. 21, 2021, a group of Knights of Columbus in France traveled to Bois Belleau to pay their respects at a monument dedicated to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Recognizing the challenges facing homeless veterans, Council 11887 in Jefferson Boro, PA, approached Veterans of Foreign Wars to offer their help. Their initiative has resulted in Knights providing duffel bags full of essential supplies for homeless veterans. It is hoped that this small act of charity will be the first step to a better life.
