Louis Conter was aboard the USS Arizona when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. More than 1,170 of the ship’s crewmen died, and 2,403 total lives were lost that Sunday morning. But Conter survived, and he bravely served in the Navy until 1967 when he retired at the rank of lieutenant commander. French Knights Honor Fallen of Belleau Wood

In June 1918, the Imperial German Army was 35 miles outside Paris and advancing quickly with aims to capture the city and end World War I. At this critical point, U.S. Infantry and Marine regiments arrived at Belleau Wood to fight alongside the French. Grossly outnumbered, the Allies managed to defeat the Germans in one of the bloodiest and most heroic battles of the war. On Nov. 21, 2021, a group of Knights of Columbus in France traveled to Bois Belleau to pay their respects at a monument dedicated to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
