Sin saberlo, ese mismo día, Heinrich Himmler firmó una orden para la ejecución de todos los prisioneros de Dachau. De forma milagrosa, las tropas aliadas liberaron el campo el 29 de abril, a tan sólo unas horas de que la orden de Himmler se cumpliera.
