Knights Serve Up Food and Friendship

Since 1982, Knights in Council 1489 in Rapid City, South Dakota have organized a Thanksgiving dinner for people in need in their community. At the 40th annual event this year, councils from all over South Dakota came together to feed more than 1,200 people. The annual event provides community and camaraderie during what might otherwise be a time of loneliness for those in need. In May 1990, St. John Paul II celebrated Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu on the island of Gozo during his pastoral journey to Malta. In his homily, he called on Catholics to look to the Blessed Mother amid life’s challenges: “May she, who ‘pondered in her heart’, the mystery of God’s love as it was revealed in the life of her Son, guide parents and children to respond fully to the vocation which they have received as sons and daughters of God, redeemed by Christ and born again in the Holy Spirit.”
