On the day following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, the Knights of Columbus established the Heroes Fund. Proceeds from this fund were paid to the families of emergency response personnel -- police, fire and medical -- who lost their lives in the line of duty and service to others. For many, the K of C check was the first assistance received, at a time when it was most needed.
